Dreaming of a genie : what can this symbol evoke?
The djinn of the Qur'an is made of smokeless fire : fire without fuel and without matter, pure movement. And it possesses free will, which angels do not. Dreaming of a genie has no single meaning : it depends on what it could do, and on what it could not.
Free as a man, immaterial as an angel
Islamic cosmology distinguishes three creations : angels made of light and without free will, men made of clay and free, djinn made of fire and free. The djinn thus occupies an intermediate position — it has a man's freedom without his matter.
The root of the word means to hide, to be invisible : these beings are neither seen nor quite absent, neither good nor evil by nature. They share the space without occupying it.
Dreams often use this figure for a force acting in you without a form. An impulse that decides before you do, an intelligence finding solutions you did not seek, an anger that chooses its moment. It is free, and it is not you.
Bound to an object, and limited
The genie of the tales obeys whoever holds the lamp or the ring, and its powers have precise bounds. In Aladdin, the ring's genie can transport his master anywhere — and cannot move the palace. The limit does not announce itself : it is discovered by asking.
That is the symbol's most useful point. A considerable capacity depends on a support, and what it can do never corresponds exactly to what is expected of it. One discovers its bounds at the precise moment one needs them.
What to remember is what was refused. Many dreamers recall an immense power and an impossible request, and it is that request which designates the dream's subject.
