Dreaming of a ring of power : what can this symbol evoke?

A power that turns around

Ring narratives all resemble each other on one point : the object keeps its promise. It makes invisible, it gives the advantage, it compels obedience. It is not a trap that disappoints, it is a power that works — and that is precisely what makes it dangerous.

Analytical psychology calls possession the state where a content ceases to be a tool and becomes a master. One believes one disposes of something, and it is the thing that disposes of us. This holds for a professional authority, a secret held over someone, a superiority one can no longer release without collapsing.

The ring dream often visits those holding an advantage they no longer know whether they use or serve. The question it poses is precise : what you hold — could you set it down tomorrow without anything collapsing?

Being unable to let go

The decisive motif is not the winning of the ring, it is the impossibility of parting with it. Every bearer believes himself the one who will master it, and none renounces by will alone : it takes an accident, or another person.

Dreams take up that structure with striking consistency. One wants to throw the ring away and the hand closes ; one gives it and takes it back ; one loses it and searches at once. It is not a moral weakness : it is the very definition of what possesses us.

What to remember is what happens at the moment of setting it down. A hesitation, a justification arriving unbidden, an excellent reason to keep it a little longer — those three are what fiction described best, and dreams use them as they are.

• A ring that makes invisible — an advantage consisting in not being seen, with the solitude it installs.
• Wanting to throw it away and failing — the decisive test : what possesses you is recognised by this.
• Wearing it without using it — awareness of a power one neither employs nor releases.

• A ring that tightens or burns — an advantage grown painful to bear, without being removable.
• Giving it freely — the rarest variant, which stories reserve for their freest figures.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Jung describes under the name of possession the state of a consciousness invaded by a content it no longer contains : the person still acts, but something acts through them. He noted that such contents are rarely bad in themselves — it is the relation to them that reverses. Other readings stress the dimension of contract : every power is paid for, and the price is not announced when one accepts.
