Dreaming of a caduceus : what can this symbol evoke?

Two contrary forces around an axis

The two serpents do not fight : they rise coiling in opposite directions around the same staff, crossing at regular intervals. Neither prevails, and it is their opposition that gives the whole its form.

Analytical psychology recognises there a very exact image of what it calls the tension of opposites : two opposed tendencies held together by a structure yielding to neither. The staff does not settle the conflict, it holds it.

Dreams often use this figure when someone stops waiting for one of their two parts to win. The question it poses is this : does what you live as a tearing have an axis? Without an axis, two serpents make only a knot.

The staff of the go-between

The caduceus belongs to Hermes, god of no territory : he is the god of roads, exchanges, messages, and he conducts the dead. His function is to pass from one world to another, not to inhabit either.

That dimension completes the first. The caduceus in dreams often designates a position of intermediary : the one who translates between two camps, who carries news from one side to the other, who belongs to two milieus without truly being of either. It is a useful and uncomfortable place.

What to remember is what you were doing with the object. Holding it, receiving it from someone, or seeing it in other hands tell three different relations to that function of passage — which many exercise without having chosen it.

What the object shows changes the reading

• Two serpents rising without biting — an inner opposition that has found its structure.
• Serpents tangled with no staff — the same conflict, with nothing to hold it : a knot, not a form.
• The staff alone, without serpents — a frame without tension, solid and lifeless.
• Receiving the caduceus from someone — a function of intermediary entrusted to you, sometimes without being asked.
• The wings at the top — the messenger's speed, and the fact that he stays nowhere.
• Confusing it with the medical emblem — what heals and what transmits have shared the same sign, and dreams sometimes play on that confusion.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Jung used the image of opposites held together to describe the central movement of inner life : not resolving an opposition, but giving it a form in which it becomes productive. The caduceus is one of the rare images that shows this literally. Other readings retain the figure of Hermes, god of passages and translations, whose function is to belong to two worlds.
