Dreaming of an axis : what can this symbol evoke?

What gives a centre

Traditions very distant from one another share a single image : a column, a tree or a mountain crossing the levels of the cosmos and linking earth to sky. Historians of religion named it the axis mundi. It does not serve for climbing : it serves for ordering, by giving a point from which space takes on meaning.

Analytical psychology finds that function in the psyche under the name of the Self : not the ego, which moves and agitates, but the centre around which a life organises itself unseen. The difference is felt in experience : the ego decides, the Self orients.

This is why the axis often appears in dreams during periods of disorientation, when everything moves and nothing holds. Its presence asks a simple, hard question : what are you turning around at the moment?

The bent pivot

Few dreamers see an abstract axis. They see a buckled wheel, a door that scrapes, a wobbling top, a crooked carousel — something turning badly because its centre is not true.

The symptom appears at the periphery, but the cause is in the middle. That is exactly what this kind of dream says : what troubles you shows up in your activities, your relationships, your sleep, while the point to correct lies elsewhere, more central and less visible. One treats the effects for months and nothing changes.

What to remember is whether you see the axis itself or only its effects. That distinction often says how clear-sighted you are — and seeing the pivot, even bent, is already considerable progress.

What turns around it changes the reading

• A vertical axis, column or tree crossing the levels — an inner centre regained, linking what one is below with what one aims at above.
• A wheel turning without an axle, or with an empty hub — much movement, no direction.
• Standing at the centre oneself while everything turns — a position of calm within a turbulent period, often uncomfortable.
• A bent axis — the cause of a disorder is more central than it looks : treating symptoms is futile.
• Looking for the centre of a figure or a room — a need for orientation : finding what to judge the rest from.
• An axis others are turning — a life organised around what someone else decided.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Analytical psychology associates axis and centre with figures of the Self, carefully distinguished from the ego : the first orders, the second believes it orders. Images of a centre often appear when that distinction becomes palpable. Other readings see rather a metaphor of practical orientation : what allows one to rank commitments when they contradict each other.
