What transmits without contact

A vibrating string sets another vibrating at a distance, with nothing linking them : that is resonance, and it works on one condition — that both are tuned alike. A string on a different note does not move.

Dreams often use this structure for what reaches you without anyone having spoken. The mood of a house, a relative's anxiety, the tension of a place : nothing was said, and you caught it — because something in you is tuned to that note.

The question it poses is useful : what you feel from others — is it theirs or yours? Resonance presupposes both, and that is what makes it hard to untangle.

A movement that displaces nothing

A vibrating thing moves enormously and advances not a millimetre : it is agitation in place, rapid, able to last a long time without producing displacement.

Dreams often use this figure for intense activity with no effect. An anxiety going round, a discussion beginning again, work at a high tempo from which nothing comes. It is not immobility — it is movement staying in one place.

What to remember is the intensity. A slight vibration can be a presence ; a strong one becomes unbearable, and that is generally when dreams show it. Objects made to vibrate too long end by cracking.

What vibrates changes the reading

• Feeling a vibration without seeing its source — something reaches you with nobody having spoken.
• A vibration crossing you without displacing you — agitation producing no real movement.
• Two things vibrating together — a resonance, presupposing a prior tuning between them.
• A vibration increasing — a tension rising with no event occurring.
• An object cracking from vibration — the limit of what a structure bears under prolonged agitation.
• Silence returning at once — the abrupt stop, more noticeable than the vibration itself.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Depth psychology takes an interest in phenomena without an image because they designate states rather than contents : a vibration cannot be recounted, it is felt. It notes that affective resonance — catching a relative's state without their saying it — presupposes a prior correspondence, which often makes it hard to distinguish what comes from the other and what from oneself. Other readings retain agitation without displacement and what it says of activities without outcome.
