What returns without coming from elsewhere

An echo needs two things : a voice and a wall. Nothing answered — something returned. The difference is slight to the ear and total in fact.

Dreams use this figure for situations where one believes one is receiving and receives only oneself. A circle that always approves, a milieu where one hears only what one already thinks, a correspondence where the other rephrases without adding. It is not solitude : it is worse, because it barely resembles it.

The question it poses is unpleasant : does what you take for a confirmation come from anyone? Those who dream of echoes often live through periods of being very surrounded.

The voice that fades

An echo never returns identical : it loses force with each return, and finally falls silent. The Greek myth makes it a nymph condemned to repeat only the last words of others, dying out for want of having been heard.

Dreams often use that decay. What still comes back from something past — a reputation, an influence, a saying still quoted — weakens with each repetition, and nobody decided to stop it.

What to remember is the number of returns. A single echo says a nearby wall ; multiple decreasing returns say a vast, empty space, which many dreamers perceive before being able to name it.

What the echo returns changes the reading

• Hearing one's own words return — an approval coming from nobody but yourself.
• A fading echo — what still returns from something past and is running out.
• Calling out and getting no echo — the absence of a wall : nothing sends you back, which is not always bad.

Depth psychology takes an interest in the difference between receiving and receiving oneself : a circle that returns without adding produces a particular solitude, hard to identify because it is noisy.
