Dreaming of a tunic : what can this symbol mean?

The seamless garment

The Gospels specify that Christ's tunic was woven in one piece, without seam, and that the soldiers cast lots for it rather than tear it. That detail has crossed the centuries as an image of what cannot be divided. The ancient tunic, worn by Greeks and Romans, says something similar : a garment from before tailoring, which does not segment the body. Analytical psychology reads clothing as indications about the persona : the tunic figures a persona reduced to a minimum, which may relieve or expose. It therefore observes the dream's social context. Other approaches will see a memory of a place — a hospital, a monastery, a journey. These frameworks can illuminate, but none replaces what the dream says, precisely, to the person who lived it.
