Dreaming of the number 10,000 : what can this symbol evoke?

The number that means "everything"

Greek called myriad both ten thousand and the innumerable ; Chinese speaks of the ten thousand beings to designate all that exists under heaven. In both cases the number stopped counting in order to mean totality.

That is what makes it valuable in dreams. To see ten thousand things is to embrace a whole at a glance — which waking forbids and dreaming allows. Jung places such images on the side of the Self : a totality perceived, not added up, which cannot be reconstituted piece by piece.

The question it poses is therefore : what did you see whole that you had only ever seen in part? Such dreams often leave an impression of understanding that does not survive waking, and that is normal — it was not made of reasoning.

Embracing or being overwhelmed

A totality presenting itself at once can crush as much as it reveals. There is a clear difference between seeing the whole and being lost in it, and dreams always mark it by the emotion felt.

Dreamers describe two experiences that nothing links. On one side a calming overview, where the multitude orders itself without needing to be sorted. On the other an endless proliferation — faces, objects, figures that keep arriving — producing the anxiety proper to what does not stop.

The decisive detail is therefore what you felt. Calm speaks of an integrated totality ; oppression says something exceeds you at the moment and that you are still trying to count it.

What the multitude shows changes the reading

• An ordered multitude taken in at a glance — a totality perceived at once, without needing sorting.
• Things that keep arriving endlessly — what exceeds you at the moment and that you are still trying to count.
• Wanting to count and giving up — the passage from enumeration to overview, which is progress.
• Ten thousand faces — humanity entire rather than persons, a frequent motif of belonging dreams.
• A very great number reducing to one — totality brought back to its centre, a classic image of the Self.
• A sum impossible to verify — the sense of having to account for what cannot be counted.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Analytical psychology distinguishes totality from sum : the first is perceived, the second established. Jung associated images of totality with the Self, noting that they often appear at the end of long work rather than at its start. He also noted their ambivalence — what exceeds consciousness can enlarge or overwhelm it, depending on its solidity. Other readings retain the Eastern use of the ten thousand beings, where the number means all that is manifest.
