A full round

Twelve organises time wherever it is measured : twelve months for a year, twelve hours for half a day, twelve signs for the round of the sky. It is not an arbitrary preference — twelve divides by two, three, four and six, which makes it the handiest number for sharing a cycle.

Dreams use this number when something comes full circle. A year ending, a training finishing, a period fully experienced : what remains to be discovered is no longer of the same order, one has seen every season.

The question it poses is therefore : what in you has gone full round? Those who dream of twelve often realise afterwards that they were at the end of a cycle without having named it.

The constituted group

Twelve is also the number of assemblies : twelve apostles, twelve tribes, twelve jurors, twelve knights round a table. A group of twelve is held to be complete — one does not add to it, and the withdrawal of one undoes it.

It is that second sense dreams use when they show a set of people rather than a figure. It then designates a belonging where each counts because each is irreplaceable : a team, a sibling group, a constituted circle. The difference from a crowd is clear — in a group of twelve, one absence is noticed.

What to remember is completeness. Twelve present says a whole that holds ; eleven, and the dream designates exactly the one who is missing, even without naming them.

What the number carries changes the reading

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Analytical psychology takes an interest in numbers as structures rather than quantities : Jung saw in them forms of order the psyche uses spontaneously. Twelve figures the organised whole there, which brings it close to the circle and the mandala. Other readings retain its calendar use and recall that a completed cycle is not an achievement : it begins again.
