Fattened for a date

The whole life of a farmed turkey is organised around a day it does not know. It is well fed, protected, watched over — for a deadline it has no notion of.

It is a harsh and precise image, and dreams sometimes use it as such. It designates situations where one is well treated in view of something : a post where one is handled gently before a decision, a kindness one senses is preparing a request, a comfortable place with a price not yet known.

The question it poses is unpleasant and useful : what you are benefiting from at the moment — what is it preparing you for? Those who dream of this bird have often already noticed something without having put it into words.

The bird of the shared table

The other side is quite different : the turkey is the bird of family meals, shared on a fixed date and gathering those who do not see each other the rest of the year.

Dreams often use this dimension without the bird mattering much : the table is the subject. Family obligations, the place one holds there, what is said and not said between courses. Many dreamers remember the room and the guests more than the bird.

What to look for is your role in the scene. Carving, serving, being served, or watching from the end of the table tell four very different family positions — and it is almost always the position, not the meal, that the dream designates.

The moment of the scene changes the reading

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Depth psychology takes an interest in domesticated animals because they figure what was deprived of autonomy in exchange for security : the exchange is real on both sides, and dreams sometimes recall its price. It also notes that family meal scenes almost always designate the place held rather than the food. Other readings retain the feast and the regularity it imposes on bonds.
