Dreaming of a vine and grapes : what can this symbol mean?

Pruning, or the fruit that comes from cutting

No cultivated plant depends so much on what is taken from it. Winter pruning removes most of the year's wood : the grower amputates in order to concentrate. The gesture seems brutal and it is necessary. The bunch, and the grape that is nothing alone

A bunch is a singular object : a set of identical grapes attached to one stem, almost never eaten one by one. Traditions saw in it the image of a community — a multitude held by a single stalk. It appears on ancient coins, in Jewish as in Christian iconography. Dreams often use that structure without one noticing : the question becomes the bond among like elements. The useful detail is the state of the grapes : all ripe, or some spoiled?

• A pruned, aligned, well-kept vine — often evokes patient work whose result is awaited.
• A gnarled, very old stock still bearing — stages what produces despite wear, sometimes better than before.
• Heavy bunches ready to pick — points to a maturity reached : the question becomes one of timing.
• Green, sour grapes — frequently reflects impatience, or a judgement passed too soon ; this is the fable of the fox.
• An overgrown vine running everywhere — can signal energy scattered for lack of a frame.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Analytical psychology takes an interest in cultivated plants as images of an accompanied development : the vine figures a growth that requires intervention, unlike the tree that grows alone. It therefore observes who prunes. Other approaches will see a familiar landscape, a trade, a memory of the harvest. These frameworks can illuminate, but none replaces what the dream says, precisely, to the person who lived it.
