Dreaming of a hole : what can this symbol mean?

A lack that shows

What distinguishes a hole from a void is that it is situated : it is somewhere, in something. A hole in a garment, in a wall, in a schedule, in memory. That localisation makes it a very different image from the abyss, which has no edges. In The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious, Jung likewise distinguishes emptiness as a state from a gap as an indication : the second designates what ought to be there. Digging, falling, filling

Three relations to a hole occur in dreams, and they do not say the same thing. Digging is a directed action : one searches or one buries. Falling in is undergone, and joins the dreams of falling. Filling is repair work, often long and thankless. The decisive detail is therefore the verb : what you do with the hole rather than the hole itself. And a fourth case deserves attention : looking in and doing nothing, which is perhaps the most frequent.

• Digging without finding — points to a search exhausting itself without result.

Analytical psychology takes an interest in images of lack as indications : they point to an empty place, and that place has a shape that informs. It counsels looking at the edges as much as the hollow. Other approaches will see a concrete worry — a forgetting, a loss, an expense. These frameworks can illuminate, but none replaces what the dream says, precisely, to the person who lived it.

No dictionary of symbols, however complete, can say with certainty what your dream of a hole means.
