Dreaming of a wheel : what can this symbol mean?

The motionless centre

A wheel turns only because its hub does not : a fixed point is needed for the rest to move. The Tao Te Ching draws from this a famous reflection on the central void that makes the wheel useful. In Psychology and Alchemy, Jung places figures radiating around a centre among the mandalas, and sees in that centre the image of the Self : what does not move and around which everything organises. Dreaming of a wheel therefore often raises the question of your fixed point — what allows you to pass through movement without being carried off.

The wheel of fortune

The Middle Ages made the wheel the emblem of fate : four figures rise on it, reign, fall and lie prostrate, endlessly. The image says that no position is secured, and above all that one does not choose the moment of descent. The motif returns in dreams more discreetly — a fairground wheel, a turn that rises again after going down. It frequently accompanies periods of variation one does not control. • A wheel rolling straight — often evokes a steady progression one no longer has to attend to.
• A wheel spinning without advancing, in the air or the mud — frequently reflects effort producing nothing.

• Being on the wheel, rising or falling — stages the sense of undergoing a cycle rather than steering it.
• A vast wheel with many spokes — can take on the value of a figure of order rather than an object.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Analytical psychology takes an interest in circular figures as images of organisation : they readily appear when the psyche seeks a centre. The wheel adds movement, and therefore the question of direction : is one going in circles or moving on? Other approaches will see a vehicle, a journey, a material concern. These frameworks can illuminate, but none replaces what the dream says, precisely, to the person who lived it.

No dictionary of symbols, however complete, can say with certainty what your dream of a wheel means.
