Dreaming of a bough : what can this symbol mean?

The sign one carries before oneself

The bough is a ritual object : one waves it, sets it down, lays it before a door. Palm boughs greet the entry into Jerusalem, the dove brings back an olive bough, ancient suppliants carried a bough wound with wool to signify that they sought protection. In every case it serves no purpose but to say something. In Symbols of Transformation, Jung recalls that cut but still green vegetation readily figures an intention under way : detached from its origin, not yet withered. Dreaming of a bough often points to a message one carries or receives.

The golden bough

Virgil tells that Aeneas cannot descend to the underworld without plucking a golden bough, and that it yields only to the one destined for it : the branch comes away of itself, or resists. Frazer took the motif up for his great work of anthropology. What matters here is the condition : the bough is a pass, but it is not obtained by force. Dreamers sometimes describe that resistance — a branch one cannot break, or one that gives way too easily. The useful detail is the gesture of the plucking.

The position held and the context change the reading

• Receiving a bough from someone — often evokes an outstretched hand, an offer of peace or alliance.
• Plucking the bough oneself — stages a decision : one takes, and the gesture commits.
• A dry, brittle bough — frequently reflects an intention with no life left, a gesture become formal.
• A bough covered in flowers or fruit — points to a promise still attached to what it announces.
• Waving a bough before a crowd — can signal a sign given publicly, which one hopes will be understood.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Analytical psychology takes an interest in ritual objects as condensed intentions : they do not act, they signify. It therefore looks at whom the bough is addressed to. Other approaches will see the memory of a religious festival, or a garden image. These frameworks can illuminate, but none replaces what the dream says, precisely, to the person who lived it.

What matters most to remember

No dictionary of symbols, however complete, can say with certainty what your dream of a bough means. The bough you saw in your dream carries your context, your state, your own emotion — and that very precision is what holds the real message. This is why a personalised interpretation, one that takes into account what you were living at the time of the dream, always goes further than a list of generic meanings.
