Dreaming of a prince : what can this symbol mean?

The heir in waiting

The prince holds an unstable position : he has rank without power, and his future depends on someone's disappearance. Hamlet is the exemplary figure, indefinitely suspended between what he should do and what he does. In The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious, Jung describes a neighbouring figure under the name puer aeternus : the one who remains in promise, brilliant but uncommitted, because to accomplish would mean giving up all other possibilities. Dreaming of a prince therefore often brings into play a potential slow to be realised — your own, or that of someone you are waiting to take their place at last.

The prince of fairy tales

Another tradition feeds this motif, and it is less innocent : the charming prince, who arrives to rescue and whose function is to resolve a situation in the heroine's stead. Such stories have shaped expectations of which many dreams keep the trace. The dream does not necessarily endorse that script : it may on the contrary stage it to show its dead end. The decisive detail is what happens after the prince arrives — does the dream stop there, as tales do, or does it go on?

The position held and the context change the reading

• Being the prince oneself — often evokes a potential acknowledged but not yet committed.
• Awaiting a prince's arrival — frequently reflects the hope that a solution will come from outside.
• A prince refusing the throne — stages the refusal of a charge, with what is legitimate and costly in it.
• A fallen or exiled prince — points to a promise unfulfilled, and to the mourning it requires.
• A prince and a king together — often designates the relation to an authority whose succession one awaits.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Analytical psychology distinguishes the king, who exercises, from the prince, who promises : it attends to the passage from one to the other, and to what prevents it. Other approaches will see the influence of childhood stories, or a particular person in your circle. These frameworks can illuminate, but none replaces what the dream says, precisely, to the person who lived it.

What matters most to remember

No dictionary of symbols, however complete, can say with certainty what your dream of a prince means. The figure you saw in your dream carries your context, your state, your own emotion — and that very precision is what holds the real message. This is why a personalised interpretation, one that takes into account what you were living at the time of the dream, always goes further than a list of generic meanings.
