The coffer and what it encloses

The chest is the only part of the body where protection is visible in the architecture itself : the ribs form a shelter around organs that cannot be paused. Everyday language followed : one keeps something on one's heart, has a heavy heart, opens one's heart. In Man and His Symbols, Jung notes that the unconscious readily lodges affective contents in the region that physically accompanies them. Dreaming of the chest therefore often touches on what you keep inside — not a secret in the strict sense, but a feeling that has found no way out.

Weight and oppression

The most frequent form is unpleasant : a pressure on the chest, a weight, difficulty breathing. It should be known that this often has a physical basis — a sleeping position, a cold, apnoea, and above all sleep paralysis, which old accounts already described under the name of the night-mare, a word naming precisely a creature sitting on the sleeper. The dream then gives a face to a real sensation. If such episodes recur often, it is worth speaking to a doctor : the cause is sometimes simple to treat.

The position held and the context change the reading

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Analytical psychology reads the region of the heart as the seat of affective contents, and the ribcage as their envelope : it therefore attends to that envelope's permeability. Other approaches, sleep medicine in particular, recall how often the causes are physical. These frameworks can illuminate, but none replaces what the dream says, precisely, to the person who lived it.

What matters most to remember

No dictionary of symbols, however complete, can say with certainty what your dream means. The image you saw in your dream carries your context, your state, your own emotion — and that very precision is what holds the real message. This is why a personalised interpretation, one that takes into account what you were living at the time of the dream, always goes further than a list of generic meanings.
