A space without a landmark

Relief serves for orientation : a mountain, a valley, a river give fixed points. The plain removes them. Walking long across flat country produces an effect travellers know well : one loses the sense of distance covered. In The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious, Jung takes an interest in dreamed landscapes as states rather than places : the plain often figures a period without marked events, where nothing stands out. It is not necessarily a bad phase — but it is one in which one cannot measure one's progress.

Seeing far, being seen from far

The absence of relief has two inseparable consequences : nothing blocks your view, and nothing hides you. Dreamers report one or the other depending on their state — a sense of release, or on the contrary the unpleasant impression of being conspicuous. The motif frequently accompanies situations of visibility : taking up a post, a public exposure, a moment when one can no longer blend into the scenery. The useful detail is what lies on the horizon, if anything does.

The position held and the context change the reading

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Analytical psychology reads dreamed landscapes as inner states : the plain often corresponds to a phase of latency, neither ascent nor fall. It counsels against confusing it with stagnation, for many things ripen without visible relief. Other approaches will see a real place, the memory of a journey. These frameworks can illuminate, but none replaces what the dream says, precisely, to the person who lived it.

What matters most to remember

No dictionary of symbols, however complete, can say with certainty what your dream of a plain means. The landscape you saw in your dream carries your context, your state, your own emotion — and that very precision is what holds the real message. This is why a personalised interpretation, one that takes into account what you were living at the time of the dream, always goes further than a list of generic meanings.
