Dreaming of a she-bear : what can this symbol mean?
A she-bear is not a gentler bear : quite the contrary. No animal in Europe has a fiercer reputation than a she-bear with her cubs. Care and violence are there one and the same. Dreaming of a she-bear has no single meaning : everything depends on your position — protected by her, or in her way.
A protection that does not negotiate
The maternal figure of myth is not always gentle. In The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious, Jung insists on the double face of the mother archetype : nourishing and devouring, protective and enveloping to the point of smothering. The she-bear gives birth during hibernation, in the dark of the den, without eating. The cubs are born minute and grow in total shelter, outside the world. That trait gives the symbol another dimension : the necessity of withdrawal. Some things are not done in broad daylight and require a long invisible period. The motif frequently accompanies moments when one withdraws in order to bring something to term. The useful detail is the place : the den, the forest, open ground.

- A she-bear with her cubs, seen from afar — often evokes a bond you witness without taking part in.
- Being protected by her — stages a powerful support, beyond argument and on which one depends.
- Being chased by a she-bear — frequently reflects a closeness turned threatening, often within a family bond.
- A sleeping she-bear one risks waking — points to a subject one avoids raising, whose reaction one fears.
- Dreaming of oneself as a she-bear — can signal a protective strength you are discovering, or fear to exercise.

Analytical psychology reads great protective animals as figures of instinct in the service of a bond : a force that does not reason and need not.
