Layers without a core

The image has become proverbial for describing an identity : one believes that by removing appearances one will find the essential, and there are only further appearances. Ibsen makes a famous scene of it in Peer Gynt, where the hero peels himself and finds nothing. In Two Essays on Analytical Psychology, Jung approaches the same problem differently : he distinguishes the persona from deeper layers, but warns that none is the true self to the exclusion of the others. Dreaming of an onion therefore often touches on a questioning of what one really is — and on the disappointment of finding no simple answer.

Tears without sorrow

The other trait of the onion is that it makes one weep without sorrow. It is a chemical, involuntary reaction, and yet the body produces exactly the same tears as in grief. That dissociation interests the dream. The motif often accompanies situations where an emotion appears without a cause one can name — a sadness rising without object, or conversely tears justified by a convenient pretext. The useful detail is what you feel while weeping : nothing, or a great deal?

The position held and the context change the reading

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Analytical psychology readily uses the image of layers to describe the levels of the psyche, while refusing the idea that a single core waits at the bottom. Other approaches will simply see cooking, smell, the memory of a house. These frameworks can illuminate, but none replaces what the dream says, precisely, to the person who lived it.

What matters most to remember

No dictionary of symbols, however complete, can say with certainty what your dream of an onion means. The onion you saw in your dream carries your context, your state, your own emotion — and that very precision is what holds the real message. This is why a personalised interpretation, one that takes into account what you were living at the time of the dream, always goes further than a list of generic meanings.
