Dreaming of a wall : what can this symbol mean?

The limit that defines an inside

Without walls there is neither house nor city : the first function of an enclosure is to create an inside. All ancient foundations begin by tracing a limit — Romulus's furrow around Rome, which Remus crossed at the cost of his life. In Psychology and Alchemy, Jung sees in the square enclosure a motif of protection of the centre : the temenos, the marked-off space in which something can form in shelter. Dreaming of a wall therefore often raises the question of your limits — those you set, those imposed on you, and whether they still protect something living.

Dreaming of a wall one cannot cross

This is the most frequent form. The dreamer advances and meets a surface : too high, without a door, or appearing where there was none. Analytical psychology reads the wall as a figure of psychic defence : what holds a content at a distance, and which first served a purpose. It is less interested in its presence than in its condition — a wall is useful, a fortress is a problem. Other approaches will see the concrete obstacle of a blocked situation. These frameworks can illuminate, but none replaces what the dream says, precisely, to the person who lived it.
