What one becomes to cross the night

The narrative is precise : at day's end the sun does not go out, it changes form. Become a jaguar, it descends into Xibalba and fights until dawn. So it is not a creature of darkness opposed to light — it is light in the only form that survives down there.

Dreams often use this figure for what you become in dark periods. Harder, less welcoming, capable of things you would not do in daylight : it is not another person, it is you in the form that allows crossing.

The question it poses is useful to those worried by their own hardness : what you have become this year — is it a change of nature or of form? Those who dream of this feline often cross a period they did not choose.

The spots and the jaws

Two iconographic details are worth keeping. The spots of its coat figure the stars : the animal carries the night sky on itself. And among the Olmec, the entrance to the underworld is represented by the jaguar's open jaws, from which four plants grow.

The second image is the stronger : what devours is also the door, and what grows comes from there. Entering the depths is not a fall — it is a passage guarded by jaws, and vegetation comes from it.

What to remember is what the animal did. Watching you, approaching, opening its jaws, or letting you pass : in this tradition the last variant is not a mercy, it is an entrance.

• A coat spotted like a sky — the animal carrying night upon it, in Maya iconography.

• Wearing its skin — the gesture of Maya kings, who borrowed its authority by donning it.
• A jaguar in broad daylight — the animal outside its hour, and the unease that produces.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Depth psychology takes an interest in figures that cross darkness without belonging to it : they correct the idea that a person's dark part would be their opposite. The Maya sun become jaguar gives a rare formulation — it is the same being, in the form suited to the ground. On this point it meets the description of descents as conditions of transformation. Other readings retain the feline's royal function, whose name and pelt sovereigns wore.
