A defence that does not distinguish

The spines aim at nobody : they repel everything that approaches, predator and outstretched hand alike. The balled animal can examine nothing — it gave up seeing in order to stop being reachable.

Dreams often use this figure for a protection that works too well. Withdrawal after a wound, the silence following a disappointment, an acquired caution that also pushes away those who had no part in it. It is neither malice nor pride : it is a reflex.

The question it poses is concrete : how long have you been balled up, and whom have you pricked unintentionally? Those who dream of hedgehogs generally have nothing to reproach themselves with.

It must unroll itself

Nobody can open a hedgehog. Every attempt tightens the ball, and insistence maintains it indefinitely : it is the only species from which approaching obtains the opposite of what is sought.

Dreams often use this detail exactly. One does not draw someone out of their withdrawal by pushing : one must wait, and above all stop approaching. The animal unrolls when it hears nothing more — and not before.

What to remember is what you were doing. Insisting, waiting, or moving away tell three different relations to someone closed — and the third is the only one that works, which dreamers admit with difficulty.

What the animal does changes the reading

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Depth psychology distinguishes defences that select from those that block everything : the latter protect better and cost more, since they also remove what would have helped. It notes that such dreams rarely designate a character and more often a recent reaction. Other readings retain the impossibility of opening the animal from outside, and what that implies for those who would help someone closed.
