Dreaming of jade : what can this symbol evoke?
Confucius advised studying jade in order to understand virtue, and he was not speaking figuratively : each moral quality was read there in a physical property of the stone. Dreaming of jade has no single meaning : it depends on what the stone showed of itself.
Virtues one does not declare
The Confucian reading is unusually precise : softness to the touch designates benevolence ; translucency, which lets the interior be seen, designates uprightness ; the melodious sound it gives, wisdom ; its unyielding hardness, courage ; and the fact that its corners do not wound, equity.
None of these qualities is asserted : they are observed by handling the stone. That is exactly what distinguishes a virtue from a claim — one is verified on contact, the other announces itself.
Dreams often use this figure when someone questions their own uprightness. The question it poses is stern and useful : what you believe yourself to be — does it show on contact with you? Those who dream of jade are rarely vain — more often in doubt.
The pierced disc
The commonest jade object in ancient tombs is the bi disc : a flat ring, pierced at the centre. The disc figures Heaven, and the hole is its door. Thousands have been found, placed beside the dead.
The peculiarity of this object is that its essential part is what is missing. It is not the stone that opens : it is the void it surrounds, and the matter only gives it an edge.
Dreams sometimes use this structure for what, in a highly built life, still allows a passage. An opening amid what is solid, a question left unanswered within a set of certainties : without that lack, there would be nothing to cross.
What the stone shows changes the reading
- A translucent stone letting the interior be seen — uprightness, as Confucius read it.
- A clear sound when struck — wisdom, recognised by what it renders, not by what it says.
- Corners that do not cut — firmness without hardness, the hardest of the five qualities.
- A disc pierced at the centre — a passage open amid what is solid.
- White jade — that of the fabulous descriptions, and the closest to the alchemists' gold.
- An opaque or cracked stone — what no longer lets the interior be seen, without having changed appearance.
A psychological reading, not a ready-made box
Analytical psychology places precious stones among figures of the Self, noting that jade holds a singular place : its value lies not in brilliance but in properties visible only in use. Chinese tradition makes it the matter of Heaven, formed in the earth under the effect of lightning — a celestial fecundation the texts liken to the forming of the embryo of immortality. Other readings retain the five Confucian virtues and their reading in the material itself.
