What cannot be expelled

A grain enters the shell and lodges there. The animal can neither expel it nor live with it : so it coats it with the same matter as its own shell, indefinitely. The pearl is an irritation made habitable.

Dreams often use this figure for what a person made of something they could not push away. A mourning, an injustice, an old humiliation : what came of it would not exist without the intruder, and nobody would say the intruder was therefore a gift.

The question it poses is delicate : what you hold most precious — what do you owe it to? Those who dream of oysters often answer that question without pleasure.

It must be opened to know

Nothing outside indicates whether an oyster holds a pearl : the shell is identical in both cases. And opening it kills the animal — a verification that cannot be taken back.

Dreams often use this dimension for what cannot be known without committing something. A trust that must be given before knowing whether it is deserved, a question that must be asked and will change the relationship either way, a truth known only by losing the ability to go back.

What to remember is what you were doing with the shell. Holding it closed, opening it, or returning it to the water tell three different relations to what cannot be known from outside.

Depth psychology takes an interest in what a person builds around what they could not evacuate : the forming of the pearl gives an exact material description, with the advantage of idealising nothing. The intruder remains an intruder. It notes that such dreams often accompany the late recognition of a link between an old suffering and a present quality. Other readings retain the pearl as a figure of the hidden centre, which must be opened to be reached.
