The place that compels

On a road one advances deciding nothing. At the crossroads, advancing itself becomes a choice : continuing is no longer possible, one must take a way. It is the only point of a journey where one cannot avoid deciding.

Dreams use this figure when a situation has stopped being extensible. Not that danger threatens, but that the options have narrowed to a few clear directions, none of which allows keeping the others. Those who dream of crossroads are rarely lost : they are at the end of their postponements.

The question it poses is therefore not "which is the right road?" but : how long have you been standing there? Dreams generally insist more on the stillness than on the roads.

A place long held to be dangerous

Older traditions did not treat the crossroads as a neutral point : certain dead were buried there, altars were raised, the three-faced goddess who watches all three roads at once was placed there. It was a place of meeting with what belongs to no road.

That charge says something exact : the moment of choice is an open moment, in which one is momentarily without belonging. One has left the previous road and is not yet on the next. It is brief and uncomfortable, and many crossroads dreams carry precisely that sensation.

What to remember is what you meet there. A figure, an animal, someone waiting — the crossroads is a place where dreams often set what must be heard before departing.

Depth psychology takes an interest in places of decision because they make visible what usually plays out without image : to choose is to renounce, and dreams stage the renunciation rather than the option. It notes that crossroads dreams recur until the decision is made, then cease without being noticed. Other readings retain the ancient charge of such places, held to be thresholds rather than points of passage.
