Dreaming of a carp : what can this symbol evoke?

Holding in water others flee

A carp tolerates murky, warm, oxygen-poor water : where the trout dies, it lives, and for a long time — several decades. It does not flee the bottom, it makes it its domain.

Dreams often use this figure for a resistance that does not show. Someone holding on in a difficult milieu — a complicated family, a wearing trade, a situation others would not have borne — and who makes no merit of it because they know nothing else.

The question it poses is useful to them : what you bear without thinking — would others have borne it? That capacity is real, and it often comes with forgetting one's own endurance.

Climbing the fall

A Chinese tale, taken up in Japan, tells that the carp which manages to climb a waterfall becomes a dragon. It is not strength that transforms it, it is having crossed a passage almost none cross.

Dreams often use this image without citing it : a fish swimming upstream, an effort against the grain, a slow and obstinate progress against what pushes the other way. The tale adds something valuable — transformation does not reward the effort, it follows it.

The decisive detail is the outcome of the movement. Rising, being pushed back, or stopping midway tell three different moments of one course — and the third is where many dreamers find themselves.

What the fish does changes the reading

• A carp motionless at the bottom — an old endurance you no longer count as such.
• Murky water in which it thrives — a difficult milieu in which you learned to hold.
• Swimming upstream — an effort against the grain, slow and obstinate, whose cost nobody measures.
• Being pushed back by the fall — an attempt that failed without the impulse being at fault.
• A very old carp — what has lasted in your life longer than you think.
• Seeing it transform — the rare variant : a passage crossed, and what follows is of another order.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Depth psychology places fish among the contents living below the surface : they belong to what is not conscious and manifests intermittently. The carp holds a particular place there through its longevity and tolerance — it figures what lasts in the depths without requiring good conditions. Other readings retain the tale of the climb and the transformation that follows, recalling that it is not its reward.
