A bush stops no one : three steps take you round it. It is not an obstacle, it is a screen — and the difference matters, because what it hides is never far.

Dreams use this figure for what is very close and out of sight : a truth one does not really seek, something everyone in a family knows without saying, a part of oneself one need only look at. Nothing prevents it, except that one does not go and see.

The question it poses is therefore more awkward than a question of obstacle : what you have not yet looked at — is it really hidden?

The bush that burns without being consumed

The story is famous and its decisive detail often forgotten : the fire does not destroy. What stops Moses is not the flame, it is the anomaly — something burns and stays whole, and he turns aside from his path to go and see.

Dreams use this motif for what, in an ordinary life, signals itself without destroying : an insistence, a coincidence, an emotion that keeps returning to the same subject. It does no damage, and yet it does not go out.

What to remember is what you did. Turning aside to look, as in the story, is not an obvious gesture : going on one's way is the most frequent reaction, in dreams as elsewhere.

What the bush hides changes the reading

• Something moving behind it — what is very close and you did not go to look at.
• Hiding oneself in a bush — a derisory protection, sufficient nonetheless as long as nobody searches.
• An impassable thorn bush — a real limit, to be distinguished from a mere screen.
• A bush burning without being consumed — an insistence that destroys nothing and does not go out.
• Going round without looking — the most ordinary avoidance, and the hardest to admit.
• Parting the branches to see — the gesture of going to check, often followed by relief.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Depth psychology distinguishes what is repressed, requiring work to return, from what is simply avoided, requiring only a look. The bush belongs to the second category, and that is what makes it uncomfortable : nothing prevents going to see. Other readings retain the burning bush and see a figure of what addresses someone without destroying them.
