What begins needs to be contained

A newborn cannot hold on its own : it needs an edge, a regular motion, someone nearby. The cradle unites those three conditions, which is why it became the image of every fragile beginning.

The dream rarely uses it to speak of a real child. It uses it for what has just been born in you and would not hold if exposed : a project barely formulated, a desire told to nobody, a trust returning after long wariness. Such things need exactly what an infant needs — a container, a rhythm, a presence.

The question it poses is therefore this : what is new in you at the moment, and have you sheltered it or already exposed it to judgement?

The empty cradle

This is the variant that worries most, and it deserves careful reading. An empty cradle announces nothing : it records a place prepared for something that did not come, or is no longer there.

Depending on the dreamer, that place designates very different realities — an awaited child, of course, but also a project abandoned along the way, an expectation kept up so long that it took on the form of an object. The empty cradle says above all that the welcoming arrangement has stayed in place.
