The story is known : men undertake a tower meant to touch the sky, and the punishment is not that it collapses — it is that they stop understanding one another. The work halts for want of a common tongue, and each goes his own way.

What the myth describes is therefore not punished pride but a precise mechanism : an over-ambitious project ends by destroying what made it possible. Everyone keeps speaking, nobody understands any more, and the enterprise comes apart from within. Every team, every family, every couple that set itself a disproportionate goal knows that silent dissolution.

Babylon in dreams often designates that moment. The question it poses is not "are you aiming too high?" but : where, in your life, does one still speak without anyone listening?

The city of every excess

The other Babylon is the prophets' : the city of wealth, mixture and debauchery, whose fall Revelation announces. It became the generic name of any capital judged corrupt, and that sense still runs through popular culture.

The dream uses this figure when something is perceived as too much : too much noise, too much abundance, too many solicitations, a life where one consumes without tasting anything. It appears not in those who lack, but in those who have much and are none the better for it.

The decisive detail is your position in the city. Enjoying it, crossing it without touching anything, or looking for the way out do not say the same thing — and the third variant often accompanies decisions already ripe.

What the city shows changes the reading

• An unfinished tower — a project halted not for lack of means, but because the participants no longer understand one another.
• People speaking without understanding each other — a dissolution under way in a group, a family or a couple.
• A sumptuous, stifling city — abundance that no longer nourishes, in someone who lacks nothing.
• Looking for the way out of the city — a decision already taken inwardly, which consciousness has not yet formulated.
• Witnessing the city's fall — the awaited end of a system in which you still take part.
• Speaking a language nobody understands — the isolation of one who sees what others do not.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Depth psychology likens the tower of Babel to figures of inflation : an enterprise exceeding what its authors can carry, which turns against them. It notes that the myth's sanction is not destruction but incomprehension, which makes it a remarkably accurate description of how projects die. Other readings retain the prophets' Babylon and see a figure of excess.
