Dreaming of a blind person : what can this symbol evoke?

The one who lost sight and gained vision

Tradition never made blindness a simple lack. It made it an exchange : Tiresias is blinded and then receives the gift of prophecy, and it is him Oedipus comes to consult while Oedipus, sighted, understands nothing of his own story. The narrative says something precise : outer sight can prevent inner vision. It occupies the gaze, it reassures, it gives the illusion of knowing. Analytical psychology finds this mechanism in projection : as long as one looks outward, one attributes to others what is playing out within. The blind figure in dreams is therefore not primarily one of vulnerability. It is a figure of displaced knowledge, and its presence asks : what are you failing to see, precisely because you are looking?

Dreaming of being blind oneself

The variant changes everything. It is no longer a figure one meets, it is a state one undergoes : the light goes out, shapes blur, one keeps moving by feel. The decisive detail is what you do with that deprivation. Some dreamers panic and freeze ; others discover they move perfectly well, by memory of the place or by touch. This second version is frequent in periods when habitual bearings have been lost — a changing trade, a bereavement, a departure — and when one discovers resources one did not know one had. Dreamed blindness almost never announces a real impairment ; it describes a situation where familiar bearings no longer serve.

Who cannot see and the context change the reading

• A blind person who speaks to you or guides you — evokes a part of you that knows without seeing, often intuition or an old conviction.
• Being blind and moving without fear — reflects an acquired confidence : one can do without visible bearings because one has others.
• Being blind and motionless — points to a freezing, the moment when the loss of bearings prevents any decision.
• Restoring someone's sight, or receiving it — matches the motif of revelation : something suddenly becomes visible and can no longer be ignored.
• Those around you blind while you see — often signals the sense of being alone in perceiving a situation others refuse to consider.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Analytical psychology reads dreamed blindness as a figure of the blind spot : everyone has a zone they cannot see, which shows itself through the reactions it provokes in others. Other readings see an invitation to change function : when sight no longer suffices, hearing, touch and memory take over — in other words, when analysis fails, feeling and intuition become necessary.
