The image is striking because it combines two contradictory states : efficient progress and a total absence of purpose. It often describes a period of intense activity where days follow one another without your being able to say what they lead to. The associated emotion matters as much : driving this way can feel restful or frankly disturbing, and these two versions do not say the same thing.
