Dreaming of asphodels : what can this symbol evoke?

A place without pain and without desire

The asphodel meadow is not a hell : nothing there hurts. Nor is it a paradise : nothing there is desirable. It is the place of lives that were neither glorious nor guilty, and its peculiar horror lies precisely in that neutrality.

The dream uses this image to say a state language names poorly : neither depression nor suffering, an existence continuing with nothing calling within it. One does what must be done, one lacks nothing, and nothing has relief any more. Many dreamers describe this pale landscape without managing to say why it disquieted them.

The question it poses is therefore this : how long has it been since you desired anything strongly enough for it to cost you? The absence of pain is not always a good sign.

The flower of graves

The asphodel grows on poor ground, wasteland, the edges of graves : it occupies places nothing else claims. Its tall pale stem rises over dry soil, and it lasts.

That persistence gives the symbol its second side, which corrects the first. What grows where nothing else grows speaks of a tenacious life, without brilliance, needing neither care nor rich earth. It is not beautiful in the ordinary sense ; it is there.

• Crossing it without stopping — a hollow period recognised as a passage, not a permanent state.
• Noticing one flower in particular — what still stands in you on poor ground.
• Wanting out and finding no boundary — the sense that a flat state has no edge, and therefore no exit.
• Meeting there a dead person one knew — the part of your past that no longer calls, and which it may be time to leave.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Depth psychology distinguishes suffering, which mobilises, from apathy, which calls for nothing : the second is harder to spot, precisely because it does not hurt. The pale, empty landscapes of dreams are often its first formulation. Other readings stress the flower itself, a plant of poor ground, and see a figure of persistence without brilliance.
