Dreaming of an almond or almond tree : what can this symbol evoke?

The secret and what guards it

Three layers for a tiny heart — a green husk, a hard shell, then the kernel — and the last opens only by being destroyed : that is the material definition of a secret, something small kept safe by disproportionate thicknesses. The dream uses this image to speak of a difficult approach, towards another or towards oneself : a child grown opaque, a parent who does not speak, a part of oneself one can no longer rejoin. One does not confide without breaking a reserve, and one reaches no one without forcing a little of what protected them : the question is therefore not what the almond holds, but what you are ready to break in order to know, and whether you have the right.

Sacred art gives this same shape quite another meaning, and it must be heard too : it sets Christ in glory inside an almond, the mandorla, where the shell figures the human nature and the kernel the divine. Geometrically that shape is the space shared by two intersecting circles — the zone belonging to both worlds at once. The envelope is then no longer an obstacle but a condition : what you show is not the opposite of what you hide, it is what makes it liveable.

The two readings complete each other, and the dream chooses one or the other according to what it shows you. One degree remains beyond opening : eating the almond, which tradition holds to be the gesture of one who discovers the secret. An absorbed secret cannot be given back ; it binds whoever carries it.

The kernel of immortality

The husk can be torn off, the shell split, the tree burned : the almond is what remains when everything else has been removed. The alchemists sought a substance of that kind, untouched by fire ; Jung recognised in it an image of the Self, that centre no circumstance dents because it does not depend on circumstances. This motif often visits periods when a life is being stripped — illness, humiliation, a loss removing supports one after another — and it does not promise that this will stop : it designates what cannot be taken from you, and which is generally discovered only once the rest has been carried away.

But an almond is not a pebble, it is a seed, and the nuance is decisive : what survives is not a residue, it is a germ able to remake the whole tree. Traditions have said so in their own way — the Kabbalah places in one tiny, indestructible bone the point from which the body is reconstituted ; Aaron's rod, dead wood, blossoms again into almonds.

This is what is called a kernel of immortality : not the promise of not dying, but that a new life comes out of what was destroyed. The dream restores nothing and puts nothing back as it was : what starts again is other, and would not have grown without the destruction that preceded it. The question it leaves you is this : do you accept that what follows will not resemble what came before?

• Opening the shell and finding the kernel intact — the approach succeeded : what was kept let itself be reached without being destroyed.
• A shell one cannot break — a reserve, in you or in another, resisting the means used so far.
• Eating the almond — the secret discovered and absorbed : it cannot be given back, and it binds whoever carries it.
• A bitter or shrivelled kernel — disappointment at the end of a long approach : what was protected was no longer alive.
• Breaking without need, crushing — violence done to an intimacy, sometimes under cover of wanting to understand.
• An almond sprouting in an unlikely place — the new life starting again from a remnant, without resembling what came before.
• The almond tree in bloom over a winter landscape — a word committed ahead of time, courageous and exposed to frost.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Depth psychology takes an interest in images of kernel and envelope because they describe the structure of a person : an exposed part, a kept part, and between them a threshold that cannot be forced without damage. It likens the almond to figures of the Self, that centre one does not possess and can only approach. Other readings retain the almond tree's early blossoming and see a figure of hope, with its constitutive fragility.
