What intoxication dissolves

The Greeks had a god for this, and his domain was not celebration : Dionysus presides over what overflows outlines — ecstasy, trance, the loss of measure. Against Apollo, who draws limits and gives forms, he represents the other necessary side of the psyche.

Analytical reading takes up that polarity : a consciousness held too tightly dries out, and what it refuses returns by a route it does not control. Jung himself, in a now-famous letter to the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, saw in the craving for alcohol the misdirected equivalent of a spiritual thirst — a real aspiration that took the first available means.

Alcohol in dreams therefore rarely denotes the drink. It denotes that loosening, and the question it raises : what within you can only come out if something gives way?

Drinking without wanting to

One form recurs often : the dreamer holds a glass they did not ask for, it is refilled, they drink without deciding to. The important detail is that passivity.

It does not describe a relationship to drink but to consent : something is being done with you that you did not will, and you cannot stop it. This variant frequently accompanies social or family situations where one goes along, where refusing would cost too much.

Conversely, dreaming of drinking alone and deliberately stages an entirely different subject : voluntary withdrawal, the search for a state where demands cease. These two dreams have almost nothing in common, despite the same liquid.

What the intoxication produces changes the reading

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Depth psychology places intoxication among the states where the ego recedes in favour of larger contents — which can open or overwhelm, depending on the strength of the frame. Other currents stress the dimension of avoidance : alcohol then figures what allows one not to feel, and the dream points to the emotion circumvented rather than the substance.
