Two traditions meet in this plant. Revelation names Wormwood the star that falls and turns the waters bitter ; the nineteenth century makes it the poets' green fairy, said to open the doors of perception, and which destroyed several of them.

Both sides say the same thing : something promises access and delivers poison. Depth psychology knows this structure well — that of contents which fascinate because they come from a layer deeper than the ego. Their power is real, and that is precisely what makes them dangerous when consumed instead of traversed.

Absinthe in dreams therefore questions what you seek on the side of intensity. The shortcut to what can only be obtained slowly, the inspiration one would like to force, the altered state preferred to patient work.

A taste one cannot swallow

Many dreamers do not see the liqueur : they feel the bitterness. A mouthful, a coated mouth, a taste persisting after waking.

Bitterness is the one flavour the body spontaneously refuses, the one that signals the toxic ; it is also the word language uses for resentment. That convergence is not accidental, and the dream uses it. This form often accompanies situations where an old grudge has settled without being named : an injustice kept quiet, a recognition never given, words swallowed for years.

What to remember is your reaction : spitting it out, swallowing anyway, or noticing the taste has been there a long time. That last variant is the most frequent, and the hardest to admit.

What the drink promises changes the reading

• Drinking in order to see differently — the temptation of a shortcut to what can only be obtained slowly.
• The green colour clouding when water is added — a clarity that blurs as soon as one approaches.
• The bitter taste persisting on waking — a settled resentment whose source is no longer conscious but whose effect is constant.
• Refusing the glass held out to you — a limit set, sometimes the exit from a circle where intensity stood for value.
• Absinthe as a plant and not a drink — its old use as a bitter remedy : what heals can taste bad.
• Offering some to someone — what you pass on of a bitterness that was not theirs.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Depth psychology distinguishes inspiration, which passes through and leaves a work, from excitation, which consumes and leaves a void. Substances of vision belong to the second category when they replace the work instead of accompanying it. Other readings stress bitterness as an affect : it does not ask to be sweetened but to be heard, for it always signals something unacknowledged.
