Dreaming of giants : what can this symbol mean?

What comes before order

The Greek Titans are the children of Sky and Earth, and Zeus must overthrow them to found his reign. The Norse giants likewise precede the gods. The pattern is constant : excess comes first, order comes after and must impose itself against it. In Symbols of Transformation, Jung reads such narratives as figurations of consciousness constituting itself against forces that precede it — drives, inheritances, family powers. Dreaming of giants therefore often touches on something older and stronger than you, which need not be defeated so much as located.

A question of scale

Dreams do not reason in metres : size there expresses a ratio. A giant is not large in the absolute, it is large in relation to you — and that relation is the subject. Dreamers often describe a disproportion that makes exchange impossible : one cannot make oneself heard, or be seen, or reach the face. The motif frequently accompanies relationships of crushing asymmetry — an administration, an institution, a parent. The useful detail is what you attempt despite the size.

The position held and the context change the reading

• A giant who does not see you — often evokes the sense of being negligible to a force that nonetheless concerns you.
• A sleeping or motionless giant — stages a power present but inactive : the question becomes its waking.
• Climbing onto a giant — recalls the phrase about dwarfs on the shoulders of giants : seeing further thanks to what precedes.
• A defeated, fallen giant — frequently reflects the fall of an authority believed unshakeable.
• Becoming a giant oneself — can signal a seizing of power, or the worry of taking up too much room.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Analytical psychology sees in oversized figures contents that consciousness cannot contain : their size states the gap, not their nature. It also recalls that most childhood dreams contain immense figures, which simply corresponds to a real experience. Other approaches will see an image of authority. These frameworks can illuminate, but none replaces what the dream says, precisely, to the person who lived it.

What matters most to remember

No dictionary of symbols, however complete, can say with certainty what your dream of giants means. The figures you saw in your dream carry your context, your state, your own emotion — and that very precision is what holds the real message.
