A weft and a warp

Weaving rests on two perpendicular sets of threads : the warp, stretched in advance and fixed, and the weft that crosses it. One is the condition, the other the movement. That structure has furnished almost every language with its metaphors of narrative — one spins a tale, ties a plot, loses the thread. In The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious, Jung takes an interest in weaving figures — the Moirai, the Norns — as images of destiny conceived not as a decree but as a work in progress. Dreaming of weaving therefore often touches on what you are composing from the elements given you.

Undoing by night what was made by day

Penelope weaves a shroud and unpicks it each night to postpone the reckoning : a ruse, and also an exact image of certain situations. One works hard while nothing advances, because at bottom one does not wish it finished. The motif returns often in dreams in less literary forms — work coming undone, threads unravelling of themselves, a task to begin again. The useful detail is who undoes it : you, someone else, or no one?

The position held and the context change the reading

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Analytical psychology takes an interest in patient, repetitive activities as images of the work of linking : gathering scattered elements into a coherent whole. It therefore observes whether the work holds. Other approaches will see a manual memory, a learned gesture, a settling activity. These frameworks can illuminate, but none replaces what the dream says, precisely, to the person who lived it.

What matters most to remember

No dictionary of symbols, however complete, can say with certainty what your dream means. The gesture you made in your dream carries your context, your state, your own emotion — and that very precision is what holds the real message. This is why a personalised interpretation, one that takes into account what you were living at the time of the dream, always goes further than a list of generic meanings.
