Quiet strength and the need for withdrawal

The bear holds a particular place among great predators : powerful, capable of violence, yet also spending much of the year in hibernation, withdrawn from the world. In many traditions, particularly among Nordic and Native American peoples, it's seen as a spirit of healing and transformation, precisely because it knows how to withdraw in order to regenerate. This duality shows up in dreams : the bear often represents considerable inner strength, but also a need — sometimes pressing — to withdraw from the outside world to recharge, away from all demands.

Dreaming of a bear attacking or protecting its cubs

An aggressive bear often evokes a force you've contained for too long and that ends up exploding, sometimes disproportionately to what triggered it. A mother bear protecting her cubs, on the other hand, is one of the most powerful images of instinctive protection : it can represent your own protective instinct toward someone or something precious, or signal that you need to more firmly defend what truly matters to you.

A psychological reading, not a fixed box

Some schools of depth psychology associate the bear with the archetypal mother, protective and nurturing, or with a need for deep introspection, comparable to hibernation, necessary before a rebirth. Others see it as connected to a contained anger asking to be recognised before expressing itself uncontrollably.
