The place of exchange and of worth

Every marketplace rests on a mental operation : making comparable things that are not. A basket of eggs, an hour of labour, a cloth brought from far away are all reduced there to a single measure. The crowd and the stall

Two elements return almost always : the density of people and the abundance of goods. Dreamers often describe an overflowing profusion — stalls as far as the eye can see, colours, noise. That surfeit is the dream's subject as much as the place. It frequently accompanies periods in which possibilities multiply to the point of paralysis : career choices, relationships, projects. The detail that orients the reading is not what is on offer, but your movement within it : do you head for a particular stall, or circle without buying?

The position held and the context change the reading

• Haggling, discussing a price — often evokes a negotiation under way in waking life, whose stake need not be material.
• Searching for a particular object without finding it — frequently reflects an expectation that none of the available options meets.
• A market being taken down, stalls emptying — often points to the feeling of having arrived too late.
• Selling oneself, keeping a stall — stages what you offer others, and the way you display it.
• Getting lost in the aisles — can signal a confusion between what you want and what is presented to you as desirable.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Analytical psychology sees in the market a collective space where the individual meets the common measure : what a thing is worth to you, and what it is worth to others. Other readings will stress concrete experience — shopping, spending, the relation to money and to want. These frameworks can illuminate, but none replaces what the dream says, precisely, to the person who lived it.

No dictionary of symbols, however complete, can say with certainty what your dream of a market means.
