The city of the Father and the rule

Depth psychology distinguishes two great poles among the figures that contain us : the maternal, which shelters and feeds unconditionally, and the paternal, which orders, sets a law and distributes places. London, in the collective imagination, occupies the second overwhelmingly : the crown, the court, protocol, the world's reference hour. What the dream summons is therefore not a city but an instance : the one before which you appear. The useful question becomes : what position did you hold there? Were you in order or at fault, admitted or checked, in your place or displaced? The dream then points, almost always, to your present relationship with an internalised authority — a hierarchy, a family expectation, a norm you impose on yourself and whose verdict you fear.

The fog, or what is there without being seen

No other city carries such a reputation for mist, and dreams make use of it. Fog is not darkness : in the dark there is nothing to see ; in the mist everything is there but nothing can be made out. That is precisely the description of a psychic content that is present but unacknowledged — what one knows without admitting it. A dream of a fogbound London therefore rarely concerns ignorance : it concerns what is known and held at a distance. The useful detail is your conduct in the fog : pressing on anyway, stopping, calling out to someone, or waiting for it to lift do not tell the same story about what you are prepared to look at.

And if you live in London

The archetype does not fade, but a criterion becomes necessary : does the city act, or does it merely sit there? If London is only where the scene takes place, it means no more than a kitchen in another sleeper's dream, and the meaning lies elsewhere. If instead it behaves as an instance — you are checked, refused access, a rule changes without warning, a uniform appears — then the paternal figure is indeed at work, and the dream speaks of what you answer to.

The position held and the context change the reading

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Some currents in depth psychology attach this kind of city to the archetype of the King or the Wise Old Man in its rigid version : the order that protects as long as it does not stifle, and turns sterile once it no longer tolerates deviation. Others read it as a figure of internalised authority, that part of oneself which judges continuously and is obeyed without ever having been chosen.
