Dreaming of lapis lazuli : what can this symbol mean?

A stone that comes from very far

Lapis comes almost exclusively from the mines of Sar-e-Sang in Afghanistan, worked for more than six thousand years. From there it travelled to Mesopotamia, Egypt, then Europe. Its very name says so : ultramarine, the colour from beyond the seas. That distant origin is part of the symbol. In Psychology and Alchemy, Jung shows how the rare stone occupies, in the imagination, the place of what cannot be manufactured : it is found, not produced. Dreaming of lapis therefore often brings into play the question of worth — what in you is obtained neither by labour nor by will, but encountered.

Blue flecked with gold

What sets lapis apart from other blue stones is the pyrite it contains : minute golden flecks scattered through the dark mass. The ancients read in it the night sky, and Egypt made it the material of funerary scarabs and of the masks of kings. This image of a deep blue strewn with light often returns in dreams without the sleeper being able to name the stone : they describe a blue "with points of light". The motif then joins two contrary movements — the immensity that absorbs and the point that shines — and it is that tension which carries meaning, more than the stone itself.

The position held and the context change the reading

• Holding the stone in the hand — often evokes a worth at last acknowledged, something one ceases to believe out of reach.
• Seeing it ground to powder — recalls the painter's gesture : sacrificing the object to draw the colour from it, that is, giving up possession in order to create.
• Finding lapis still held in its matrix of rock — frequently reflects an inner quality sensed but not yet freed.
• Wearing a lapis jewel — stages what you show of your worth, and to whom.
• A dull or false stone, or one that proves to be painted — can signal a doubt about the authenticity of something you take for granted.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Analytical psychology places the precious stone among the figures of the Self : a dense, incorruptible centre that withstands time where the rest comes apart. Blue adds its own charge, that of distance and depth. Other readings, closer to lived experience, will simply see the precious object — what one keeps, what one gives, what one loses. These frameworks can illuminate, but none replaces what the dream says, precisely, to the person who lived it.

What matters most to remember

No dictionary of symbols, however complete, can say with certainty what your dream of lapis lazuli means. The stone you saw in your dream carries your context, your state, your own emotion — and that very precision is what holds the real message.
