A limit that belongs to the gaze

No line is drawn out there : the horizon is the point where the earth's curvature stops your sight. Advance and it recedes as much. Climb and it moves away. It is a limit depending not on the world but on your position.

Dreams often use this figure for what cannot yet be seen, with nothing preventing it. There is no obstacle, no enemy : there is simply where you are looking from. Some things become visible by changing place, not by forcing.

The question it poses is useful : what you do not yet understand — is it hidden, or merely out of your present reach? These are not the same situations and do not call for the same effort.

Walking towards what recedes

One never reaches the horizon, and everyone knows it. It is nonetheless one of the most frequent motifs of walking dreams : one advances towards a receding line, without that being lived as a failure.

Dreams often use this structure for what orients without being reachable. An ideal, a trade one will never practise perfectly, a person one will never know entirely. The line is not there to be reached : it is there to know which way to walk.

What to remember is your feeling while walking. Weariness says a badly chosen goal ; calm says you had already understood that arrival was not the subject.

What the line shows changes the reading

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Depth psychology distinguishes the world's limits from the gaze's : the latter move with the person, and most inner work consists in changing position rather than forcing. It notes that horizon dreams often accompany moments when someone begins to see further than before. Other readings retain the line as a figure of the ideal, useful as long as it orients.
