An offering that serves nothing

All traditions that burn incense do so for the same reason : it is a precious thing one gives up and which profits nobody visible. The gesture's value rests precisely on its uselessness.

Dreams often use this figure for what you give without return and without proof. Time given to someone who will not know, care taken over work nobody will examine, fidelity to a memory. Nothing comes back, and that is what makes it other than an exchange.

The smoke that rises

Incense smoke rises slowly, fills the whole room, and can be neither held nor directed. It is the only visible part of the combustion, and it vanishes as it rises.

Dreams often use this dimension for what is transmitted without a support. An atmosphere in a house, a reputation, the effect a person produces by doing nothing : it fills the whole space and cannot be pointed at.

What to remember is the smoke's direction. Straight, it says a stable climate ; pressed back to the ground, it says a prevented rising — and divinatory traditions read much into that detail.
