Dreaming of a dog : what can this symbol evoke?

A symbol of loyalty, but not only that

Humanity's companion for millennia, the dog carries a dominant symbolism of loyalty, protection, and attachment. In many traditions, it's also a guide between worlds : the Egyptian dog-god Anubis accompanied souls into the afterlife, and in Greek mythology, Cerberus guarded the gates of the underworld. This dual role — loving companion and threshold guardian — shows up in dreams, where the dog can represent both a need for secure attachment and a vigilance toward an important passage or decision.

Dreaming of a dog that bites or attacks

When an animal so tied to trust turns against you in a dream, it's often a sign of a felt betrayal, or a fear that a trusting relationship might break. It can also point to a loyalty toward yourself that you're neglecting : a part of you "warning" you insistently, almost violently, because a gentler message went unheard.

Colour, condition, and number change the reading

• A black dog — in some Western traditions, associated with an unsettling figure or a foreboding ; in dreams, it often points to a protection emerging from the shadows, not necessarily threatening.
• An injured or sick dog — often evokes a weakened loyalty or a fragile part of yourself in need of care and attention.
• A puppy — usually signals an emerging attachment, a still-young trust, or a part of yourself still innocent and in need of protection.
• A pack of dogs — can reflect a feeling of being surrounded or judged, or conversely, a group or community supporting you.
• A lost or stray dog — often evokes an unmet need for belonging, or a loyalty with no clear recipient in your current life.

A psychological reading, not a fixed box

Some schools of depth psychology associate the dog with social instinct, with loyalty to oneself, or with a psychic "guardian" function protecting certain parts of our unconscious. Others see it as connected to obedience or submission, sometimes questioned within the dream.
