Dreaming of chaos : what can this symbol evoke?

Before things were separated

Almost all creation narratives begin the same way : something exists, without form and without distinction, and the founding act consists in separating — light from darkness, the waters above from those below, land from sea. To create is first to distinguish.

Jung takes up this structure to describe moments when a consciousness loses its categories : not madness, but the state where the bearings that allowed sorting cease to work. The alchemists called massa confusa the undifferentiated matter at the start of the work, and held it necessary.

The chaos dream often visits those whose frame has just given way. The question it poses is difficult : is what you live as a collapse the end of something, or its first state? From the inside the two greatly resemble each other.

What has no name yet

A mess can be tidied ; chaos cannot. The difference is this : in a mess, things exist and are badly placed. In chaos, they are not yet things.

Dreams use that nuance precisely. They do not show an untidy room but a world where nothing can be named : forms merge, places blend, people change identity. Those who report such dreams often say they cannot recount them — that is exact, and it is the subject.

What to remember is what appears first. In dreams of this kind one thing generally ends by distinguishing itself from the rest, and it is what counts : it indicates where order returns from.

What the undifferentiated shows changes the reading

• A world where nothing can be named — the loss of the categories that allowed sorting, not a simple mess.
• Places blending together — a frame that gave way, often recently and unseen.
• One thing finally distinguishing itself — the point from which order begins again, and the dream's most important detail.
• Trying to tidy without succeeding — effort applied to a state that is not a matter of tidying.
• Water without a shore — the oldest image of this state, prior to all separation.
• Calm felt within the chaos — the rare variant, generally signalling a crossing already under way.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Jung distinguished collapse from necessary dissolution : in both cases forms come undone, but the second precedes a reorganisation. He noted that nothing allows telling them apart at the time, and that the existence of a frame — a relationship, a work, a rhythm — most often makes the difference. Other readings retain the creative value of chaos in origin narratives, recalling that none of them stops there.
