Dreaming of heat : what can this symbol evoke?

One rarely dreams of heat as an object : one dreams of it as a state. Nothing is visible, and yet the whole dream is modified by it — the slowness, the difficulty moving, the sense that the air itself resists.

The degree changes everything

Between the warmth of a hearth and the heat of an overwhelming summer the difference is not of nature but of degree : it is the same thing, more or less strong. No other element tips so simply from benefit to ordeal.

Dreams often use that tipping. An affection that smothers, an attention that becomes surveillance, a commitment passing from impulse to obligation : nothing changed in nature, only in intensity. That is what makes such situations hard to name and to leave.

What to remember is what the heat still allowed you. Moving, breathing, thinking : when those three become difficult in the dream, it is no longer a climate but an excess.

Depth psychology takes an interest in formless elements — heat, cold, darkness — because they figure states rather than contents : one cannot oppose them, only cross or leave them. It notes that such dreams often designate a relational climate the dreamer has not yet formulated. Other readings retain heat as a figure of life itself, since a cooling body is a dying one.
