Dreaming of a chain : what can this symbol evoke?

The same links for two uses

One chains a prisoner and moors a boat to the quay with the same object. The well chain goes down for water ; the door chain keeps people out. Use alone decides, never form.

Dreams play constantly on that ambiguity, which is what makes the symbol useful. Many real bonds have exactly that double nature : a family, a contract, a fidelity both hold and hold back, and the two effects can rarely be separated.

The question it poses is therefore finer than it looks : does what holds you back also hold you up? Those who dream of chains often want to cut through a situation of which they have examined only one side.

The weak link

A chain never gives way everywhere : it gives at one point, and that point decides all the rest. Its strength is not an average, it is a minimum.

Dreams often use this structure for what, within an otherwise solid whole, will go first. A team, an organisation, a sequence of steps, a lineage : the dream rarely shows the whole chain, it shows where it wears.

What to remember is your position. Being the fragile link, seeing it in another, or trying to strengthen it tell three different experiences — and the first is more frequent than is admitted.

What the chain does changes the reading

• Being chained — an endured constraint, whose external origin remains to be established.
• A chain holding a boat — what keeps you from drifting, sometimes taken for a shackle.
• A link giving way — the precise point through which a solid whole becomes vulnerable.
• Holding a chain whose other end is out of sight — a real bond with something you do not identify.
• Breaking a chain — a liberation, with what it carries away of what was holding.
• A rusted but intact chain — an old bond nobody maintains and which still holds.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Depth psychology takes an interest in dual-use objects because they describe the structure of most bonds : what protects constrains, what constrains supports. It warns against swift liberations, which remove shackle and support together. Other readings retain the succession of links and see a figure of transmission, where each generation holds to the previous.
