Common usage remembers the chameleon as the one that takes the colour of wherever it is : the figure of perfect adaptation, merging with every milieu it crosses.

Dreams often use that reading, and its harshness must be heard. It designates someone who becomes what is expected of them, in every group, with an ease that is no longer a strategy but a habit. It is a considerable social skill, and it has a price : by taking every colour, one no longer knows which is one's own.

The question it poses is direct : in which milieu are you still visible? Those who dream of this animal often describe a fatigue they do not attribute to this.

A body that says what it feels

The animal's reality is more interesting than its legend : it changes mostly according to its inner state — a chameleon that is frightened, irritated or ready to mate does not wear the same colour. It is not camouflage, it is expression.

That reversal gives the symbol its second reading, the opposite of the first. Dreams then designate someone whose emotions show without their saying them — a face that betrays, a reaction preceding speech, a body more honest than its owner.
