Dreaming of bamboo : what can this symbol evoke?

The emptiness that makes supple

A solid stem resists until it breaks ; a hollow stem flexes and returns. Bamboo is not strong in the ordinary sense — it is elastic, and its force comes from opposing no mass to the wind.

Far Eastern traditions made it a model of conduct, and the dream takes up that lesson without the discourse : it shows someone bending and holding. This concerns periods when frontal resistance has failed — a hierarchy one could not make yield, an illness, a bereavement, a constraint no will can lift.

The question it poses is therefore not "how do I hold firm?" but : what in you could give way without breaking? That is not the same as giving up.

The nodes and growth in stages

Bamboo does not grow in one stretch : it rises in segments, each closed by a node, and that node is precisely what keeps it from collapsing. Some species stay years underground before surging up in a few weeks.

This growth interests the dream for two reasons. First because it segments : a life advances that way, in closed stages, and each finished stage supports the next. Second because it is long invisible : what seems sudden has often been prepared without a witness.

Depth psychology distinguishes rigidity from firmness : the first tolerates no deviation and snaps, the second absorbs and returns.
