Dreaming of a scale : what can this symbol evoke?

The weighing of souls

Ancient Egypt places at the threshold of the afterlife a scale where the dead person's heart is weighed against a feather. The motif runs through the centuries : it reappears in Christian last judgements, and even in our expressions — weighing the pros and cons, tipping the scales.

What these images share is not sanction but exactness : the scale does not punish, it records. It indicates a state of fact that neither plea nor remorse modifies. That is what makes it formidable, and also what makes it just.

The scale in dreams therefore often appears when someone seeks to know what they are worth, or what something is worth. The question it poses is this : what exactly do you expect from this weighing — a confirmation, or a permission?

Balance is not a state

A balanced scale never holds for long : a breath suffices. It is an instrument of measure, not a goal — nobody seeks to have the pans stay still, one seeks to know which one descends.

That detail corrects a widespread error. The balance spoken of in a life — between work and the rest, between two people, between what one gives and receives — is not a stable state reached once. It is a permanent adjustment, and believing it secured is the surest way to lose it.

What to remember is the movement of the pans. Still, they speak of a momentary rightness not to be confused with rest ; oscillating, of work under way ; jammed, that something is preventing the measurement itself.

What is weighed changes the reading

• Seeing oneself on a pan — awaiting a verdict on one's own worth, often addressed to someone precise.
• A rigged or false scale — the suspicion that an evaluation concerning you is not honest.
• Still pans — a momentary rightness, which it would be imprudent to take for a secured state.
• A pan dropping at once — a decision already made, which consciousness has not yet formulated.
• Holding the scale oneself — the position of the one who judges, with the weight that implies.
• Weighing something against a feather — the Egyptian disproportion : what is light can tip more than what is heavy.

A psychological reading, not a ready-made box

Depth psychology takes an interest in images of judgement because they often designate an inner instance rather than a real court : that part of oneself which evaluates continuously and is obeyed without having been chosen. It notes that this instance is often harsher than any external judge. Other readings stress measurement itself, and what it means to want to quantify what cannot be quantified.
